Chiropractic Treatment for Allergies
It's that time of the year again, when allergies strike. "What time of the year?" you may ask. Unfortunately, any time of the year can be allergy time. In fact, it is estimated that over 40 percent of the population is suffering from some type of allergy at any given moment.
What are Allergies?
Allergies are caused by a reaction to substances which are known as "allergens." These allergens trigger over-reactive responses within the immune system.
Generally, an allergen is harmless to the majority of the population. However, when someone has an allergy, the immune system of that person attacks the allergen.

"Every time allergy season came around, I was miserable. I couldn't breathe, my nose was either running or stuffy, or both. My head would pound and I just could not go outside.
My husband had been seeing Dr. Minond for his headaches and he suggested I make an appointment.
I can't believe the difference. Dr. Minond has enabled me to get my life back. I am so happy not to have to take those horrible antihistamines anymore for my allergies."

The immune system releases histamines to block the allergen and it is the release of these histamines that cause allergy symptoms. The body "remembers" this reaction and triggers the allergic reaction anytime a person comes in contact with that allergen again. Men, women, and children all equally suffer from allergies. In fact, allergies are the most common reason that children miss school each year.
Symptoms of an Allergy
Allergy symptoms can range from mild to severe. Even mild symptoms of an allergy can have a negative affect on quality of life. I have had patients who told me they hated to see spring and warmer weather arrive.
They have stated that even though the warm weather is such a treat, they know they will spend the majority of spring sneezing and wiping their eyes. Mild allergy symptoms include:
- Sinus pressure that most people associate with allergies.
When these symptoms worsen and seem to feel continuous, they are said to be moderate allergy symptoms. Moderate allergy symptoms can also include sore throats and itchiness. Those who suffer from moderate allergy symptoms may have trouble catching their breath after exertion.
Severe allergy symptoms are life-threatening and usually happen within minutes of exposure to the allergen. Severe symptoms can cause swelling of different parts of the face and neck, can impair breathing, cause mental fog and confusion, and cause vomiting and abdominal pain.
Causes of Allergies
There are many different causes of allergies. Some allergens are carried in the air and are referred to as "airborne allergies," some allergies are in response to food, medication, or insect bites or stings.
- Airborne allergies- Airborne allergies can include allergies to tree and flower pollen, mold, or animal dander. Pollen is the most common allergen and one of the most unavoidable. Pollen, especially the pollen of plain types of trees and plants, such as grass, is so tiny that it can sneak into even the cleanest house. Invisible to the eye, pollen is the number one cause of allergies in both adults and children.
- Food allergies- Food allergies can be in response to any type of food, although food allergens are generally nuts, dairy products, and shellfish. These types of allergies should not be confused with food intolerance. Food intolerance is caused when a particular food irritates a person's stomach or digestive system. An allergy to food is a response by the body's immune system. In most cases, the body recognizes proteins found within the food as harmful substances and releases histamines and antibodies to fight them.
- Nut Allergies- People who suffer from a nut allergy have a more severe response than those who suffer from dairy, fruit, or shellfish allergies. While consuming any of these products, if allergic to them, can cause severe symptoms, people with nut allergies do not have to consume them to have an allergic response. Merely being in the same area as nuts and inhaling the dust of the nut can cause a severe allergic reaction.
- Insect allergies- All people are slightly allergic to insect stings and bites. When an insect stings or bites, most people experience a mild swelling and itching or burning sensation. Those who are severely affected can go into what is called anaphylaxis, which stops their breathing. Allergic reactions to insect stings and bites is usually faster than to other allergens, because an insect injects the venom, or allergen, directly into the bloodstream.
- Medications- Allergies to medications occur because the body recognizes medication as a "foreign agent" and attempts to protect you from it. The body releases histamines which attach to the medication.
Allergy Treatments
The majority of doctors do not treat allergies, instead, they treat the symptoms by prescribing common antihistamines. It is a little known, but true fact, that antihistamines can cause heart problems, especially if taken in conjunction with alcohol and sedatives.
The National Cancer Institute also recently published findings that showed that these OTC antihistamines caused cancer tumors to grow more rapidly in lab animals. I believe that a stress-free immune system and nervous system operates better than a stressed one.
By using various homeopathic techniques, along with removing spinal subluxations, I can free your nervous system and immune system from stress. A healthy, stress-free body is fully capable of fighting off allergens without the use of harmful medications.
